I came up with the perfect name for our last cat (Earl Grey), who tragically passed away after only 2 months from a rare chest infection. I’m not sure if I could come up with something else so appropriate on my own again, so I’ve decided to crowdsource it and put it out to all you incredibly creative people.

The name is for a FEMALE Russian Blue cat. I’m after something unique and cool, with a regal tone and possibly some comical value. To give you an idea of what I’m after, here’s a couple of good names (my last cat, and my friend’s cat):

Earl Grey (my last cat)

- Earl is a regal title

- Grey is the colour of a Russian Blue

- Earl Grey is funny because it is the name of a tea blend

Chairman Meow (my friend’s very cool cat)

- Obviously a very funny play on Chairman Mao, the Chinese leader during the cultural revolution.

- Chairman is an official title – conveying distinction and regal

- Chairman can also be construed as a cat’s favourite pastime of curling up on chairs

So hopefully that gives you some sense for the type of names I’d like to come up with. For a little further inspiration and background info, here’s some brief traits of Russian Blues:

- Fur – is a darkish grey colour. They have a double-coat which makes them extremely plush like mink

- Temperament – Russian Blues are very affectionate, yet not overly needy. They are smoochy, but are happy to be just nearby if you’re not in the mood.

- Voice – Russian Blues are extremely quiet. It’s not unusual for them to be totally silent, and if they do ever meow it’s barely audible and is more of a squeak.

- Intelligence – Russian Blues are extremely intelligent and dog-like. Earl Grey would fetch and would even wake me in the morning by putting his toy in my hand and nudging me until I played with him.

Please note: I’m not really interested in Russian names like Natasha, Vika, Olga etc etc unless they form part of something else that makes them phonetically fit into a common phrase or have some connection to a key Russian political or historical figure for example. Ie, I don’t find simply naming a Russian Blue cat with a Russian name anything innovative in itself.

The image shown is of my previous cat, Earl Grey, but it looks very similar.

  • Q: Can you tell me anything about you / your lifestyle that might help come up with a suitable name?

A: I live in a modern inner-city apartment in Sydney. I'm a web developer, so anything kind of techy or videogame related (like my Princess of Purrsia suggestion), could add some relevance to me, but isn't necessary.

  • Q: Would you prefer a name with some Russian connotation, or is anything OK?

A: Actually I don't really think of the cat as Russian. I think the Russian names suggested so far are interesting, and I'm interested in hearing more, but I'd err on the side of something more nation agnostic :)

  • Q: Do you require an available url such as a .com

A: No. Even if I did decide to register a domain it wouldn't have to be .com so I'd have a tonne of options.
