We’re a well-known travel guidebook publisher. Recently, we launched a service that enables anyone to buy and download individual PDF chapters from our guidebooks, via our website.

For example, a person going to New York for the weekend can download just the restaurants chapter from our NYC guide. Someone on a round-the-world trip can get information that matches their itinerary using chapters from several guides. A traveller in Mexico who decides on a spur-of-the-moment trip to Cuba can go online to get the chapters from our Cuba guide. In other words, travellers can get what they want, when they want it, anywhere in the world with internet access.

A bit more information on the product: the chapters are straight from our books – the information is not specially updated, so a person downloading a chapter sees the exact same content as a person who buys our guides in a bookstore. The PDFs are printable, and any PDF-capable phone or handheld device can handle the chapters. The price of each chapter varies, based on the book price and the length of the chapter; most chapters cost between US$2-$5.

We’re looking for a name to describe this service. We think travellers will like it, so the best name is one that simply and explicitly tells people what it is, without the need for explanation. The name should work in website navigation (i.e. as a clickable button or in a nav bar) as this product will have its own section on our site – so cryptic, elaborate, or obscure names that rely on hidden meanings won’t work. The plainest, most accessible way of expressing the concept is what we’re looking for.

  • Q: would using the term PDF in the name make it hard to trademark? PDF is a registered trademark of Adobe Inc.

A: It might make it hard to trademark, but that isn't neicessarily an issue. It's more important that the name be straightforward than that it be something we can trademark. Thanks.

  • 2. Ch@pters

read as "Chapters each at". this phrase refers to the purchase price - "Chapters each at" $X (some dollar amount). @: the symbol developed as a mercantile shorthand symbol of "each at" (from Wikipedia). Troy Tessalone (15162)

  • 3. ZipGuides

Because you can "unzip" existing travel books, take only what you want, and zip together your own Baedeker. And you can do it in a jiffy -- zip!
